On Wednesday 27th September, Helm is running an Open Day to showcase its facilities. Referrer partners, schools and anyone working with young people are welcome to visit our office in the centre of Dundee to view our facilities and meet our friendly team. Attendees will have an opportunity to take part in interactive activities as well as attend a networking session.

The aim of the event is to showcase the fantastic facilities we have available and to help anyone working with young people to better understand what we offer and how they can refer young people to Helm. Attendees will have the opportunity to:

  1. Meet with Helm’s Chief Executive to find out more about Helm
  2. Visit our fantastic onsite training salon ‘Lavish Lounge’ and learn more about the experiences and SQA qualifications young people can gain
  3. Meet our Art Therapist and see our studio facilities learning more about art therapy and the mental health benefits of engaging with sessions while at Helm
  4. Meet with Instructors who work at Helm’s Trades Learning Centre and Mechanics Learning Centre – Learning Centres are Centres within Helm that focus on specific industries giving young people hands on experience that puts them ahead of other young people applying for college courses, apprenticeships and jobs, because they have gained more in-depth knowledge, confidence and qualifications in a particular industry
  5. Learn more about Hame, our housing project, where we work in partnership with Hillcrest Housing Association to provide homes with support for Care Experienced Young People in Dundee aged between 16 and 25 years old
  6. Meet with Instructors who provide life skills and employability training to understand how they work with young people to develop their self-confidence, teamwork, communication, resilience and more
  7. View other onsite facilities such as our industrial kitchen and gym to learn more about the holistic support we provide to young people and the life skills they can gain at Helm
  8. Network with the rest of Helm’s team to find out more about the work we deliver

There are four tours, each lasting an hour and a half, running throughout the day. You must book a tour in advance and places are extremely limited so please get in touch today to book your place. Email hello@helmtraining.co.uk to book your visit and please feel free to share with colleagues or others working with young people who you think might be interested in the opportunity.

Alternatively, if you’re not able to come to a tour, we’re running a networking session over lunch offering the opportunity to meet staff and find out more about Helm. Places need to be booked in advance so email hello@helmtraining.co.uk to find out times and further information.

We’re looking forward to meeting people who work with young people and sharing information about how Helm can support them. When I started at Helm in 2020, I often heard the phrase “Helm is Dundee’s best kept secret” and I’m passionate about making sure that this is no longer the case. The impact on young people of the Covid lockdowns is becoming increasingly apparent and there are more young people than ever that need to access support from Helm to enable them to start to take the first steps towards a positive destination.  I’d urge anyone working with young people to book a place at our Open Day to find out more about the charity.

Ally Calder, Chief Executive at Helm
