Helm has two strands of training programme that the young people undertake to develop qualifications and employability skills.

The Pathways Programme offers young people in their final year of compulsory education the chance to increase their core skills and personal development, as well as allowing them to take part in a range of practical activities, including: Motor Vehicle Maintenance; Skills for the Hair and Beauty Industry; Horticulture; Health & Fitness and Hospitality. They will also take part in a number of workplace visits and have the opportunity to have taster sessions with local employers.

Students on Pathways are referred by high school or the Offsite Education Service.

Employability Fund (EF)

Stages 2 and 3 are targeted at the 16-18 age range.

Stage 2 EF students will spend more time in Helm focusing on skills development and qualifications before moving onto placement experience. They will have the opportunity to spend time on a work placement when they feel they are ready.

Stage 3 EF students should be work-ready and the focus for them is work experience. This will give them challenging and exciting opportunities to gain work experience with one of our many work placement providers in Dundee and the surrounding area.

We also offer EF Stage 4 that allows adult returners to retrain on a short-term basis to acquire skills for their chosen industry.

Students on EF2 are referred through Skills Development Scotland. EF3 can also self-refer or be referred through the school guidance team.

Our students can progress through all three programmes here at Helm and will move on to paid employment, further training, apprenticeships or college.
