Hame - a safe place to live
HELM HOUSING
Hame is our housing project, working in partnership with Hillcrest Housing Association to provide homes with support for Care Experienced Young People in Dundee aged between 16 and 25 years old.
We recognise that one of the barriers to gaining qualifications or a job is having a place to call ‘hame’, where you belong and feel safe. Our aim is for all young people to have a safe place to live that is appropriate to their needs, supports them in building relationships and gives them a springboard from which they can go on into employment and have the future that they want.
Our homes are for young people who are leaving care and looking to move on with some support into their adult lives. We offer young people homes, who have perhaps previously had their own tenancy which didn’t work out, for any reason.
From the beginning, we have designed and consulted with Care Experienced Young People in Dundee, asking for their opinions on the project, employing Care Experienced Young People so they are involved in all aspects of the design of the homes and the project moving forward. Our homes help create a stable, living space, and will in turn let young people focus on building a future for themselves.
All of Hame’s work is strengths-based and has at its core an emphasis on relationship building. Our team includes young people who have lived experience and they bring peer support to our young people.
Duty of Candour Report 2023
All health and social care services in Scotland have a duty of candour. This is a legal requirement which means that when things go wrong and mistakes happen, the people affected understand what has happened, receive an apology, and that organisations learn how to improve for the future.
An important part of this duty is that we provide an annual report about the duty of candour in our services. This short report describes how our Hame project have operated the duty of candour during the time between 1 April 2022 and 31 March 2023. We hope you find this report useful.
- How many incidents happened to which the duty of candour applies?
In the last year, there have been no incidents to which the duty of candour applied.
- Information about our policies and procedures
Where something has happened that triggers the duty of candour, our staff report this to the Housing Support Manager who has responsibility for ensuring that the duty of candour procedure is followed. The manager records the incident and reports as necessary to the Care Inspectorate. When an incident has happened, the manager and staff set up a learning review. This allows everyone involved to review what happened and identify changes for the future.
All new staff learn about the duty of candour at their induction. We know that serious mistakes can be distressing for staff as well as people who use care and their families.
We have counselling support in place for our staff if they have been affected by a duty of candour incident.
