Who are Helm?
Helm are a grassroots youthwork charity and we have been working with young people in Dundee for over 30 years. We specialise in supporting our students through their first transition into adult life, whether that is college, jobs or apprenticeships.
A Scotland where all young people dare to dream, and are empowered to have their hopes and dreams become a reality
Every student at Helm works as an individual, and has time and support to build good relationships and find out what their real passion and interests are. Students set their own goals, and have open access to whatever support is needed along the way to address any practical, family, health or learning issues, so that they can focus on what is really important to them.
Anyone from the age of 15 upwards! We work inclusively with young people from the age of 15 upwards (in their last year of statutory education) and upwards. Students can come to Helm through school or job centre referrals and also can just self-refer – just get in touch.
We have a hugely experienced and dedicated team of 18 staff, who have helped hundreds of young people make their first successful step into work or college. We offer a wide range of sports, cooking, digital and creative activities, combined with lifeskills and core skills support. Students spend the time they need building their confidence, skills, and qualifications while deciding what work experience they would like to find out more about.
We have great partnerships with over 50 employers in our community who provide our students with work placement experience, apprenticeships and jobs. If we don’t have an employer in your area of interest, we find one, and we also know that not everyone knows what they want to do, so our employers are happy to provide tasters to help you find out if a particular area might be a good fit for you.
Helm students follow their interests and are today working all over Dundee and beyond in sectors as diverse as animal care, IT, the automotive industry, business administration, health and beauty, the retail sector and uniformed services, to name but a few. We also have a very close relationship with Dundee and Angus college, and we work with the admissions and pastoral team there to support many of our students every year to gain a college place of their choice.
Our students have access to great learning and leisure spaces, smartboards, a well equipped gym, a training garage, an in-house hair and beauty salon, a landscaping and gardening project, a mobile beauty service business, and a catering kitchen.
We work with around 250 young people every year in Dundee from the age of 15 upwards, all of whom need some support and guidance to make the best possible sustainable transition into adult life. Our work is supported by a wide range of funders and partners.
