Our work

Helm Training has a vision to help change the lives of the young people it works with and in particular to help the most disadvantaged individuals in the communities it serves, in particular to engage with the most 'hard to reach' groups, supporting them through transitional or difficult periods of their lives towards a successful future. Often these young people have not fitted in well in a school setting or have complex home lives where integration and quality time has been restricted. Helm Training’s aim is to re-engage them, provide guidance and work with their ambitions and situations towards finding ultimately a place in the workforce or further education.

Alternative to school: Pathways
Leanne

Leanne's attendance at school had dropped severely. Although she was capable and had a good relationship with her teachers, the environment no longer suited. Even when she started at Helm Training her attendance was erratic. However, soon Leanne began to settle and in particular she started to build a close relationship with one of her instructors who recognised her potential. With her new-found confidence she started working towards a number of qualifications and is Helm's first learner to reach SCQF 5 in Communication, IT and Numeracy. She also spent time in groups supporting other learners and it is this responsible and supportive role that has been recognised in her gaining a place at Dundee College to study Introduction to Care which she hopes will lead to her qualifying for a career as a Nursery Nurse.

To do this Helm provides a range of programmes which tackle many of the key issues that have hindered the young people from thinking about establishing a career path. Helm works closely with Skills Development Scotland and other support agencies to provide strands of training with different emphasis. These programmes include the important areas of numeracy, literacy, problem solving, IT and working with others, along with social skills, communication and addressing health issues.
