15-16 year olds
For those young people who have left school early, Helm runs a programme called Pathways funded by Dundee Education Department which in particular aims to re-engage these young people in a ‘non-school environment’, in learning and developing a career – providing a lot of guidance, and working in particular on attendance and punctuality alongside the core skills and training modules. Many of the young people on this scheme will move on to the Get Ready for Work programme or return to college at 16 years.

16-18 year olds
Those aged 16 -18 years can enter one of the programmes depending on their individual needs assessed by Careers Scotland, on the Get Ready for Work Programme (GRfW). The training will depend largely on the existing skills of the young person – for some a focus on working in a group, interview skills and IT may be all that is required before trying for a work placement, for others more support may be needed on communication with an emphasis on literacy and numeracy. Each young person will have a Key Worker who they will see on a weekly basis to discuss their individual training plan and any other issues.
Helm operates a work environment with conditions of service similar to that in the workplace and with training that works towards certificates accredited by Scottish Qualification Authority, ASDAN and Get into Enterprise. In addition, role play, group music and art are used as enabling activities to develop confidence and the in-house kitchen is used to teach basic cooking along with other independent living skills.
Our Employment Team sources work experience placements and job opportunities for participants who are ready to progress to employment. They will also identify suitable courses for those who wish to enter Further Education or training, and support them in making the transition either to work or Further Education.

Danielle left school with few qualifications and nothing organised - she was not sure what to do and hadn't applied to college.
In October she went to Careers Scotland and they referred her to Helm where there were a number of placements available. Danielle started doing administration at Brakes Operations Department and enjoyed the mixture of work she had to do.
The Employment team put her forward to three different interviews at Axis Shield, in the Council and for a beautician position. She felt the interview went well with the Council and was offered the position, "I felt happy in the environment and liked the people straight away. They made me feel welcome."
Danielle will be starting in the Planning and Transportation department full-time and working towards her Level 2 SVQ qualifications through Quest, the vocational training group. |
