ROSS MAKES CARE COUNT
Ross at company car

As the population gets older, careers in care of the elderly are becoming more varied and for Ross, a Get Ready for Work learner, a placement at Balhousie Care Home has cemented this decision,

" Working on this placement has confirmed what I want to do in my career. I have really enjoyed working with older people - they are extremely grateful when you help them and I have grown attached to so many of them. I hope to get a full-time job here soon!"

NO SHORT CUTS FOR CRAIG
Craig hairdressing
Craig came to the Angus centre after leaving school with a definite idea that a career path in hairdressing is what he wished to pursue. Craig took part in many employability sessions and took steps towards working in his 'dream career' by creating a C.V., learning interview techniques and structured job searching.

After only a relatively short time, it was suggested that Craig try a few weeks work experience at Danny Laverty Hairdressers in Arbroath and right from day one he showed great enthusiasm and a natural ability. Craig completed his work experience and was fortunate enough to be asked by Danny Laverty to stay on as a permanent member of staff. Craig is now undergoing training with the company and always has a smile for the customers!

With determination, Craig set out to achieve his dream career which he was pleased to find as interesting and rewarding as he had hoped - and through his own efforts and the valued contribution of Danny Laverty, Craig's future is looking great!

PLACEMENT OPENS DOOR FOR JAMIE
Jamie at exhibition

Even with a good qualification, many young people are struggling to get a foot in the door and that situation is only going to worsen with the tightening employment market. Jamie was in exactly that situation last year with a solid qualification in book-keeping from Dundee College, but struggled to get work. She came along to the Careers Scotland Jobs Fair and following a chat with the Helm Employment Team, started immediately on a placement with the Credit Control division at Brakes.

As she worked hard for two months, showing great potential, she was put forward for an interview with Axis-Shield and she successfully gained a full-time position with the Customer Service department and is now progressing through her SVQ Level 2 in Administration through Quest, a working partner of Helm.

Sandra Fisher, Employment Liaison Officer was delighted with the result,

"Jamie had all the skills but lacked the confidence and work experience on her CV to get a job but with our help we were able to overcome this and help get her a full-time position. I am delighted for her as she thoroughly deserved to get a job."

KERR FULFILS AMBITION
Kerr receives Army certificate

Kerr started as a Pathways student who had benefitted hugely from the approach taken on that learning programme. After progressing onto Get Ready for Work, he then started a six-week Induction to the Armed Forces course at Perth College which far from putting him off a career in the Services only served to encourage him further and earlier this year, he officially signed his Oath of Allegiance with the Royal Scots Regiment and has now started his sixteen week initial training.
