HELM – WHERE LEARNING WORKS
Supporting young people in Dundee for over 40 Years.
Helm has been supporting young people aged 15 to 25 years, in Dundee, to gain education and employment, for over 40 years. As a grassroots organisation we have maintained our connections with communities as we have grown to work across Tayside.
Giving young people hands on experience of a job is crucial to them choosing a career and gives them an advantage over peers when applying for jobs. To make sure that young people gain the experience they want, we have partnerships with over 80 employers in Tayside. They offer placements, apprenticeships, employability and give talks and tours on the work environment and employer expectations.
The current cost-of-living crisis is yet another ongoing challenge our young people face.
Over the past year, we’ve seen an increasing number of young people at Helm struggling to afford food, clothing, toiletries, housing, and energy costs. Staff have started providing lunches in addition to our daily breakfast club, and financial support by applying for emergency grants on behalf of young people and their families or helping them apply for government funding such as the Scottish Welfare fund.
