Those aged 16 -18 years can enter Get Ready for Work (GRfW) based on their individual needs assessed by Careers Scotland. The training and number of training weeks they receive will depend largely on the existing skills of the young person. Each young person will have a Key Worker who will discuss their individual training plan and any other issues. Helm operates a progression system where learners furthest from the job market start in one group and as their confidence and skills improve move up to the group ready for work or a work placement. When a young person is ready for work they will work with the Employment Liaison Team to find a suitable placement or help them gain employment or enter college.
Helm operates a work environment with conditions of service similar to that in the workplace and with training that works towards certificates accredited by Scottish Qualification Authority and ASDAN.
In addition, while in the centres young people can access a range of vocational activities through the LIVE It! Enterprise including beauty and hair, gardening, mechanics, childcare and cooking.

Dean
I just didn't know what to do in life...
When Dean started with Helm from school he had no idea what he wanted to do. He enjoyed playing computer games but had no other ideas. Despite some reservations he started taking part in the gardening activities - going to the allotment, plant nursery and taking part in the project to develop a woodland garden for residents of a Servite sheltered housing scheme in Broughty Ferry. Dean particularly enjoyed working alongside another learner, Jason and they became firm friends.
Working on the garden projects and encouraged by his new skills, Dean decided to apply to Dundee College for the Landscaping and Horticulture course and despite a huge demand for places was awarded a place which he has just started. "Coming to Helm made me discover a completely new career - I now have a keen interest in gardening and landscaping and want to learn more for a career."
